The Essex Centre community is the largest of the four communities and is the stomping grounds of the province's most successful Junior C hockey team. Situated in the centre of Essex, this community offers many shops and services, as well as several schools, including Essex High School and its beautiful attached community centre. Essex Centre is also the gateway to Highway 401, the major transportation route to the city of Windsor and Detroit. The community is easily accessible from Highway 3.

The Harrow community is a largely agricultural community and is home to one of Ontario's oldest country fairs. Residents make an effort to honour the products of local farmers. Additionally, this community is the base of Canada's Agriculture and Agri-Food research centre for field crops and greenhouse vegetables.

The Colchester community sits along the Lake Erie coast and is known for its public beach. You'll see plenty of cyclists and tourist making their way along the wine route and the Lake Erie Waterfront Trail. This community is one of the oldest in the region, dating back to the War of 1812 and the Underground Railroad.

Lastly, there is the McGregor neighbourhood, another agricultural community with plenty of activities. Some of the highlights in McGregor include Co-An Park, a large outdoor sports area; the annual McGregor Music Festival; and the Essex County Steam and Gas Engine Museum.

Essex Local Highlights

  • There are several excellent wineries around Harrow and Colchester, including Colio Estate Winery, Sprucewood Shores Estate Winery, and Cooper's Hawk Vineyards, among others.
  • In addition to the festivals mentioned above, Essex celebrates an international beer festival, a walleye fishing derby, a summer fun fest, and many other community events.
  • Colchester Beach and Harbour offers a sandy beach, free parking, 80+ boat slips, a bait and tackle shop, playgrounds and splash pads, a concessions stand, and more; it's a great place to spend a day.
  • Essex is very bicycle-friendly. In addition to having flat terrain and being part of the scenic Waterfront Trail, the town has implemented designated bike lanes and has on- and off-road trails.

The Greater Essex County District School Board oversees most of the public schools in Essex, including Colchester North Public School, Essex Public School, Harrow Public School, and Essex District High School.

The Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board includes Holy Name Catholic Elementary School and St. Anthony Catholic Elementary School in Essex.
