The South Windsor Lifestyle

South Windsor is very much a coveted neighbourhood for people moving to the city. It is situated in a great location for commuters. The Macdonald-Cartier Freeway (401) marks the southern and western borders of South Windsor, and the E.C. Row Expressway is an east-west thoroughfare that marks the neighbourhood's northern boundary. These two roads make commuting anywhere else in the city or region easy. Huron Church Road leads directly to downtown and to the Detroit Bridge, and Walker Road is another commuting route with access to shopping, groceries, and dining.

The fact that many schools are located within the boundaries of South Windsor makes it an even more attractive place to live. It is easy for homeowners to drop students off for school in the morning and then hop on one of the nearby thoroughfares to commute to work. 

As one of Windsor's best neighbourhoods, this area of the city also has plentiful activities for residents to enjoy year-round. During the summer months, the neighbourhood has an outdoor pool available at Central Park and one of the most popular 18-hole municipal golf courses in the city. One thing that is immediately noticeable in South Windsor is that there are many homes with brick facades. 

Historically, South Windsor started development in the 1950s and has only continued to grow. Homes here have been impeccably maintained, and many feature gorgeous hardwoods, granite countertops, and open floor plans. Those in the northwest quadrant of the neighbourhood tend to be older and can start in the $550,000 range. Homes in the southern and southeastern sections of the neighbourhood tend to be newer. 

A share of Windsor's waterfront homes can be found in the Southwood Lakes community of South Windsor. Many of these fall within the luxury home category and can easily top $1.1 million in asking price.

Transit Windsor is the public bus system in the city. It has numerous routes in and out of the neighbourhood, especially leading to and from St. Clair College. The Optimist Community Centre is centrally located in South Windsor, in Memorial Park. It has a multipurpose room and meeting rooms that can be rented for special events. It also has a full-sized gymnasium that is perfect for basketball, volleyball, floor hockey, and other indoor sports. 

The Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex on Pulford Street is one of Windsor's best community centres. This is a much larger rec centre with many amenities and rooms available. The complex has two small ice rinks with enough room for 500 spectators each. Visitors can enjoy a leisure or sports gym, a dance studio, a couple of different preschool rooms, and multiple meeting rooms for rent. 

Another main attraction in South Windsor is the popular Budimir Library, opened in 1966 and named after Nikola Budimir, who purchased the site for the library. It's also listed on the Heritage Registry (Arch. Johnson & McWhinnie).

Neighbourhood Shopping

Shopping is easy to reach for residents in South Windsor. The Devonshire Mall is located just off the E.C. Row Expressway on the neighbourhood's north side. It has more than 160 shops available, including Hudson's Bay, Bath & Body Works, Lululemon, and a Cineplex Movie Theatre. 

There is also a major shopping area located on Walker Road, just east of South Windsor, which has everything from groceries to pet supplies. For a more quaint shopping experience, there are great local shops and things to do in Windsor's Little Italy.

Plus, many nearby attractions can be enjoyed. Here are some of the many things to do in South Windsor.

Outdoor Activities

The Devonwood Conservation Area is directly east of the neighbourhood and provides an outdoor haven for residents all year. Visitors can occasionally encounter wildlife along the conservation area's 4.5 kilometres of hiking trails. There's free admission and parking, and the area is open to the public daily from dawn to dusk. 

As its name implies, Central Park is centrally located in South Windsor. The outdoor leisure pool is the biggest draw at the park during the summer months. Major baseball tournaments take place at this park each year. Visitors can also play ball hockey, basketball, and tennis on numerous outdoor courts. It also has a children's play unit and a spray pad that's open in the summer.

The outdoor fun doesn't end once you leave the neighbourhood, either. Just outside South Windsor is Jackson Park, one of Windsor's best parks, and the massive Ojibway Prairie Provincial Nature Reserve is to the west of the community.

Restaurants, Breweries & Bars

There are several restaurants in the Yorktown Plaza along Grand Marais Road in South Windsor. Oven 360 is a great family eatery that prepares signature pizzas in an open-flame oven. They also have Paninis and desserts.

Those looking for upscale dining in an elegant setting will enjoy the Cotta Food Bar on Dougall Avenue. It has an exquisite Italian menu that includes hard-to-find items in South Windsor. The Keg Steakhouse + Bar is on Division Road across from the mall. In addition to great steaks, it has a lounge, an outdoor patio, and a bar with TVs.

Windsor's nickname is Whiskeytown, and there's a Walkerville neighbourhood tour called Drinks of Walkerville that includes a visit to a local whiskey distillery and a brewery.

The Roseland Golf and Curling Club has a beautiful 18-hole municipal golf course that's open in the summer and a six-sheet curling facility that's open from October through March.
